OUR ESTATE

The Nagambie Lakes region is only one of eight locations worldwide dramatically influenced by its location to large bodies of water

 OUR ESTATE

Wine Region

Tahbilk Estate is situated within the sub region Nagambie Lakes; within the Goulburn Valley located in Victoria, north of Melbourne.

The Goulburn Valley is known as distinctly warm, with a typical inland valley-floor climate and substantial diurnal temperature ranges. The heat is mitigated by the abundance of lakes, billabongs and creeks associated with the Warring or Goulburn River.

In 1993, the Nagambie Lakes Wine Region was recognised by Wine Australia as distinctly different to the broader locale of the Goulburn Valley due to the large bodies of water in the region, including Lake Nagambie.

As well asrecognising the region’s unique soil type which is rich in iron oxide (Duplex 2.2); which has a positive effect on grape quality and gives the wines a defined regional character.

Our Estate encompasses 1200 hectares in total of which only 300 hectares is under vine. To put this in perspective, Melbourne CBD is 600 hectares - The property is twice the size of Melbourne CBD. A large portion of the state is water, including 11km of Goulburn River frontage and 8km of tributary that weaves throughout the estate.

The estate offers many experiences from the cellar door to wetlands walks to Eco cruises and the restaurant.

Tabilk-Tabilk Eco-trail

The place is known as tabilk-tabilk in the language of the Taungurung people, translated into place of many waterholes.  It is a sacred place which is very special to all who have laid feet on the land. In 1995 the first steps were taken to regenerate what is now known as the tabilk-tabilk eco-trail area through the addition of understory vegetation.

Taungurung Native Flora trail

We have opened the Taungurung Native Flora trail through section 1 of the wetlands walk.  An ongoing works program continues to maintain and enhance the area as an important conservation area.

Indigenous Flora Walking Trail

The Tabilk-Tabilk Indigenous Flora Trail walkshares and celebrates Taungurung culture as a collective gift to all visitors to Tahbilk Estate so they can continue to learn and grow in their knowledge and understanding of Australia’s first people.

GOLDEN AGE

Historic Buildings

It was in 1860 when the first vineyard was planted on the river valley slopes of the then known Tabilk Pastoral run. This signalled the start of a new venture and a new opportunity as the ground was cleared to make way for one million cuttings of Shiraz. The cottages, sheds, stables and the blacksmith shop remaining on the property today were all built between 1860 and 1865.  By 1876 Tahbilk was experiencing its first Golden Age, which continued until the end of the nineteenth century.  As each year progressed, more land was cleared and the acreage under vines increased.

 WINEMAKING

Underground Cellar

The first underground cellar was excavated in 1862 and by 1863 was in full use; the cellar continues to be in use today and is a popular visitor experience. With production at its peak, by late 1875 excavation of a new underground cellar was in progress.

Designed by Melbourne Architect William Zealand, it was remarkable for the time, being constructed without a single-key stone marking.  A marker towards an ambition to make wines equivalent to Europe. Today you can walk through the underground cellar at your leisure taking in the untouched history, where wine is still aged to this day.
