Wine Diamonds: The Sparkling Secret in Your Glass

As we celebrate 100 years of Purbrick family winemaking at Tahbilk, we’re raising a glass to the stories, traditions, and surprises that come with every bottle. And this year, one of those surprises might just sparkle a little more than usual…

What Are Wine Diamonds?

If you’ve ever opened a bottle of wine and noticed tiny, glittering crystals on the cork or at the bottom of the bottle, you’ve discovered wine diamonds—the affectionate name for tartrate crystals. These natural formations occur when potassium bitartrate, a compound derived from tartaric acid (one of the main natural acids in grapes), crystallises in the bottle, especially when the wine is stored in cooler conditions.

They might look like sugar or tiny shards of glass, but rest assured, wine diamonds are completely harmless and tasteless. They’re simply a visual reminder of wine’s natural origins and gentle handling.

Why Do They Appear?

Wine diamonds are more common in white and sweet wines, particularly those that haven’t undergone a process called cold stabilisation. At Tahbilk, we honour minimal-intervention winemaking, allowing the wine to express its full character, even if that means a few crystals appear along the way.

Our Cane Cut Marsanne, a beautifully luscious dessert wine, occasionally reveals these sparkling gems. It's a style that's perfectly suited to showcasing this natural phenomenon.
