Embracing Taungurung Culture: The Wawa Tabilk-Tabilk Experience
In proud partnership with wawa biik – Taungurung Cultural Experiences, Tahbilk invites guests to immerse themselves in the Wawa Tabilk-Tabilk experience—a profound journey into the cultural landscape of tabilk-tabilk, meaning “place of many waterholes” in the Taungurung language.
Led by passionate Taungurung guides, this three-hour experience begins with a traditional Welcome Smoking Ceremony, followed by a guided walk along the Indigenous Flora Trail. Here, guests learn about the traditional uses of native plants and the deep connection between the Taungurung people and the land. The journey continues with a gentle eco-cruise through the wetlands, offering opportunities to observe the diverse birdlife, frogs, turtles, and seasonal aquatic life unique to this area. Throughout the experience, participants are encouraged to engage in meaningful conversations, gaining insights into Taungurung culture, language, and perspectives.
Nature: The Tahbilk Eco Cruise
Complementing the cultural immersion is the Tahbilk Eco Cruise, a 45-minute guided tour through the estate's wetlands and billabongs. Aboard an electric-powered, environmentally friendly boat, guests learn about the unique ecosystem and Tahbilk Estates' ongoing conservation efforts. The cruise offers opportunities to spot local wildlife, including pelicans, swans, and sea eagles, and to appreciate the natural beauty that defines the region.
Commitment to Conservation
Tahbilk's dedication to environmental preservation is evident in its extensive wetlands and wildlife reserve. The Tahbilk Wetlands serves as a sanctuary for various species, including the endangered freshwater catfish (Tandanus tandanus) and the Water Shield Lily (Brasenia schreberi). Collaborations with environmental groups and government departments support research and education initiatives aimed at enhancing biodiversity and improving water quality.
A Holistic Experience
Visitors to Tahbilk can further immerse themselves in the estate's offerings by exploring over 4 kilometers of eco-trails and boardwalks, providing a closer look at the diverse flora and fauna. The combination of cultural experiences, ecological education, and the estate's historic charm creates a memorable visit that resonates with both the heart and mind.
For those seeking a meaningful connection to Australia's natural and cultural heritage, the Wawa Tabilk-Tabilk experience at Tahbilk Estate offers an enriching journey through time, tradition, and the environment.
