About this winei

The 2017 Museum Release Marsanne

Enjoy Now to 2024/2026
It wouldn’t be Tahbilk without Marsanne. First planted on the Estate in the 1860s, we have largest single holding of this unique varietal worldwide including surviving vines dating back to 1927, amongst the oldest in the world.

Showing some typical aged Marsanne development on the nose ... toasty, honeysuckle, and a hint of marzipan. The nose gives indication for some complexity on the palate that is delivered alongside still youthful traditional lemon and lime characters on the palate. Subtle hints of lanolin on a deliciously clean finish.

Don't take our word for it ...

"A long-time champion of marsanne, Tahbilk celebrates both its youthful energy and its aged beauty across a range of wines. Here we see the latter in all of its near-ageless allure, maintaining the honeysuckle, citrus, appley brightness of its youth while starting to build on its earlier promise of beeswax smooth texture with a developing gentle toastiness.
Another stunning museum release. It's hard to believe it's six years old."
Jeni Port | www.winecompanion.com.au | May 2023

"Light straw-green, a flowery honeysuckle perfume translates into a delciuos mouthfeel, mineral acidity subdued by a generous serving of lime, Granny Smith apple and guava fruits. Once it has reached the plateau of its overall flavour, it will coast for another 3 - 5 years. Drink to 2027."
"Honeysuckle, beeswax and wisteria on the bouquet, then firm, racy mineral and Meyer lemon on the palate, gaining a depth of fruit flavour towards the finish."
James Halliday I The Australian | April 2023

Reviews for 2017 Marsanne on release ...

“It is a summer favourite for those in the know, a whiff of jasmine to start, then juicy with a mouth-watering display of tropical fruits, apples and pears sprinkled with lime juice, finishing with salivating pith and minerals. Imagine a wine version of apple and guava juice.”
Tony Love | Adelaide Advertiser SA Weekend Magazine 100 Hot Summer Drinks

The 2015 Museum Release Cabernet Sauvignon

Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon - and Shiraz - is crafted with a commitment to traditional wine making values.
Fermentation takes place in original open vats over 155 years old, with maturation then in similarly aged large French oak prior to bottling. Smaller French and American oak barrels are also used, with the wine from these blended back during the final filtering and bottling.
The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared.

Enjoy Now to 2027/2029
"The nose is intense and concentrated cassis, blackcurrant and green herbal characters. The cassis and blackcurrant features on the palate where the green herbal character of tomato leaf and mint are dominate. The wine is true to the varietal, lifted on the front of the palate and the mouth puckering tannins follow through on the back palate. Time is still very much on its side … enjoy now or drink over the next 4-6 years."
Holly Cusworth | Tahbilk Cellar Door Manager | September 2023

“A classic iron-fist meets velvet glove wine with spice, cassis and a touch of minty earthiness, and chewy tannins that fill out the mouth-feel beautifully. A must have with steak and any red protein that’s seen some fire.”
Chris Morrison | Delicious on Sunday | Sydney Sunday Telegraph

“Unimpeachable varietal expression from the first whiff of the bouquet to the finish of the medium-bodied palate. A fusion of cassis/blackcurrant, black olive, bay leaf and savoury tannins. As is usual, oak plays a minor role in shaping flavour.”
James Halliday |  www.winecompanion.com.au

“Excellent vintage and some lovely wines with fruit weight, purity and varietal trueness. Top wines lovely.
A good class of wines with the best showing beautiful varietal fruit and freshness with cassis blackberry and mocha/choc notes.
Best examples show beautifully ripe tannins and confident, layered aromatics. Australian Cabernet resurgent!”
Judges Notes | Royal Queensland Wine Show 2017 | Gold Medal Class 40

The 2014 Museum Release Shiraz

Crafted with a commitment to traditional winemaking values. Fermentation takes place in original open oak vats (over 155 years old), followed by maturation in similarly aged large French oak barrels prior to being bottled. Smaller French and American oak barrels are also used, with the wine from these blended back during the final filtering and bottling.
This has remained the way over the years in the face of changing winemaking styles and trends and the resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared.

Enjoy Now to 2024/2026
A very classical aged Tahbilk Shiraz, stylistically a wine of the old world. The leather, cedar, earthy characters lead the aromas and palate with a hint of plum on the back palate. It is a true medium bodied wine, with acid and length to carry it through. Near to realising full cellaring potential but still holding up well.
Holly Cusworth | Tahbilk Cellar Door Manager | September 2023

Don't Take Our Word For It  ... as reviewed on release

Freshness and richness are the keys to this medium-bodied Shiraz; there is as much black cherry as blackberry to the fruit on offer, the tannins ripe, and the oak making its presence felt to an unexpected degree.
James Halliday | www.winecompanion.com.au  | August 2017
