Celebrating Two Pillars of Tahbilk: Alan George & Mary Nolan
At Tahbilk, history isn’t only written in vineyard rows and old cellars – it’s carried forward every day by the people who dedicate their lives to the craft and care of great wine. Recently, the Estate came together to honour two such people: Alan George, better known to most as “Georgy,” and Mary Nolan. Between them, they represent decades of skill, consistency, and the kind of quiet leadership that makes a family-owned winery thrive.
Alan George – Winemaker, Mentor, Friend
For over 25 years, Georgy has been part of the winemaking heartbeat at Tahbilk. Known for his meticulous eye and steady hand in the winery, his colleagues describe him as both fiercely dedicated and refreshingly down-to-earth. Many vintages have passed through his care, but it’s the way he has mentored younger winemakers and guided the next generation that stands out just as strongly as the wines themselves.
Mary Nolan – Precision and Care in Bottling & Despatch
If the wine is the soul of Tahbilk, Mary has been one of its great custodians. As Bottling and Despatch Manager, she has overseen the final stage of the journey from vineyard to table – ensuring every bottle that leaves Tahbilk does so with the same care it was crafted with. Her deep knowledge, problem-solving instinct, and commitment to quality have earned her admiration across the Estate. Just as importantly, her warmth and humour have made the bottling line a place of camaraderie.
A Celebration of Dedication
The recent celebration was not just about milestones of service; it was about gratitude. Gratitude for the consistency Georgy and Mary have given through changing seasons, new releases, and shifting demands of the wine industry. Gratitude for the way they embody Tahbilk’s values of tradition, quality, and community.
As Alister Purbrick remarked during the event, people like Georgy and Mary don’t just “work” at Tahbilk – they help shape its story. Their contributions reach far beyond the estate walls, into every glass of Tahbilk wine enjoyed around the world.
Tahbilk is proud to recognise and thank Alan George and Mary Nolan. Their legacy is woven into every vineyard block, barrel, and bottle – a lasting reminder that great wine is always, at its heart, a human story.
