About this winei

With its origins in Spain where it is known as Garnacha or Garnacha Tinta ... although the French in the Rhone Valley would argue that it was theirs first ..., Grenache (its French moniker) was one of the first varieties to be introduced into Australia in the 18th century and eventually became the country's most widely planted red wine grape variety until it was surpassed by Shiraz in the mid-1960s.
It is generally spicy, berry-flavoured and soft on the palate and produces wine with a relatively high alcohol content and requires careful yield control for best results.
Tahbilk's history with Grenache dates back to initial 1.87 hectares planted in 2005 with an inaugural single varietal release occurring in 2007.
A number of follow up vintages ensued, before it found its place as a blending partner in our popular Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre and Grenache Mourvèdre Rose blends.
This 2024 vintage sees it return as a single varietal release where it's spicy, cherry/raspberry fruits and hints of pepper can shine brightly on their own.

Teamed with Shiraz and Mourvèdre in our popular GSM blend and equally in the highly regarded Grenche Mourvèdre Rose, here we allow our Estate Grenache to stand alone and shine in its own right.
With the character that vine maturity brings, our twenty-year-old plantings have delivered a juicy and vibrant release. Aromatic raspberry and cherry fruits with sweet spice and oregano notes are joined by floral and savoury characters on a fresh and expressive palate.
A wine for the here and now … and tomorrow.

Vintage Notesi

2024 Vintage
Surprises aren’t really something that I like, in fact after 20 years in the wine industry, you would think that nothing surprises me anymore, but every year it seems that the season does.
Once again there was high disease pressure, which was partly a carry-over from the previous season, compounded by the intermittent rain and weather events. There also wasn’t the heat that we have seen in previous years, no days above 40 degrees, but none-the-less the season resulted in with the whites and reds ripening at the same time, and organised chaos of vintage once again upon us.
Our first pick was on the 12th February, and our last on the 21st March, so a speedy six weeks and we had everything into the Winery.
Yields were overall slightly below average, but quality is looking good, with what I would consider a very good year for the whites overall and selected parcels of reds are outstanding.
Comparing vintages seems pointless, as every year brings with it its own set of challenges, and 2024 was no different. The final decision is yours as our 2024 are released, when you will be able to enjoy for yourself the outcomes of another challenging but always rewarding, season.
