With a contributing average vine age of over 35 years Tahbilk 'Old Vines' Cabernet Shiraz releases set a new standard for such blends from the Estate.
"The classic, unique Aussie blend meets old vines and a top vintage year and the result is so, so good. To be precise, it affords a taste of two contrasting grapes totally integrated as one, meshing black and red berries, herbs, leaves, briar and earth and spice in an elegant, balanced whole. Smooth and bright in tannins. Made to last."

    About this winei

A little bit about Tahbilk 'Old Vines' Cabernet Shiraz releases ...
The quintessentially Australian blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz saw initial releases at Tahbilk from the 1957 and 1958 vintages under Eric Purbrick’s tutelage, believed to be the first such ‘Estate Grown’ blends in Australia.
It was not until 14 years later that Eric’s son John resurrected the blend that saw four vintages released in the 1970s and a further two in the 1980s.
The Estate is blessed with significant older vineyard blocks with, among others, Shiraz dating back to 1860 and 1933, and Cabernet Sauvignon to 1949.
It is selected of these aged vine plantings that are the primary source for the ‘OId Vines’ Cabernet Shiraz when, from the 2010 vintage, the blend returned and is now a permanent fixture of Tahbilk’s premium Reds portfolio. With a contributing average vine age of over 35 years they set a new standard for such releases from the Estate.

    Tasting Notei

    Enjoy Now to 2030/2036

Blessed as we are on the Estate with significant old vine plantings, and the character that these mature vines bring, then an ‘Old Vines’ release from a highly rated vintage is eagerly anticipated. Richly flavoured and expressive, bay leaf, mint and tobacco aromas are joined by plum and berry fruits on a sinuous palate, with time in oak adding further intricacy to an impressive release that will realise added character with time in the bottle.

    VINTAGE 2021

La Nina had a major influence on the 2020/21 growing season. Tahbilk experienced good rainfall post 2020 vintage, and regular rainfall through the year.

Notwithstanding the challenges this presented for the vineyard team, who worked diligently to get their sprays on as required, the frequent rain days ensured the vineyards looked healthy and vibrant, with no disease or growth issues.

The effects of La Nina contributed to a cool to warm, but not hot summer, which meant a slow and steady ripening. By mid-March we’d picked all of the whites with all very promising – Marsanne in particular.

We’d also picked some reds by mid-March, mostly for Rosé, however daily light showers that followed had us all nervously waiting for the rain to stop so we could start picking the reds in earnest. The rain did stop and, after a lull in ripening, the reds jumped in sugar and the Winery staff were flat out keeping up with the picking.

For a vintage that looked touch and go quite a few times, 2021 will be rated a very good, to potentially stellar, vintage.
